The further south we got, the more brilliantly green the water became. A true sign that we were not in Kansas anymore;-)
As you can see, it's only one lane of traffic in each direction so the drive is a leisurely one, but we weren't in a hurry. The beauty of vacay!
We enjoyed seeing the remnants of days goneby in the form of the Florida Overseas Railroad. We would learn later that this railroad was built by Henry Flagler (see previous post) & connected Key West to the mainland, which was previously only accessible by water. However it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935.
The weather was true to it's summer repuation- sunny one second, rainy the next. With two 'major' storms systems brewing in the Atlantic between Hurricane Earl & Fiona, we didn't have high expections for perfect weather. (Instead we traded in for cheap hotels & less people!)
We watched anxiously as the mile markers slowly counted down. 57...33...18... until U.S. 1 finally came to an end & unveiled KW to us.
Beautimus!
